ICCL outraged at plans to restrict Freedom on Information Act

The Irish Council for Civil Liberties has expressed outrage at the Government's plans to restrict the Freedom of Information Act.

The Fianna Fail-Progressive Democrats coalition is planning to water down the legislation to prevent the public from gaining access to correspondence between civil servants and their ministers which is due to become available under the act this April.

Aisling Reidy, the director of the ICCL, said: "The net effect is the Government will be less accountable and we, the ordinary citizens, will have less access to information about what our Government is doing."
