The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, has said he hopes that the number of compensation cases relating to religious abuse in residential institutions will not run into the thousands.

Speaking in Dublin, Mr Ahern admitted that the Exchequer would be hit hard if a lot of claims were lodged with the Residential Institutions Redress Board.
