A ship that caught fire off the west coast is now safely docked in Galway bay.

The crew reported a fire in the hold of the 78-metre Scombrus, a French factory ship, at around 2am, when the ship was 50 miles west of the Aran Islands.

A member of the ship’s crew was taken to hospital suffering smoke inhalation.

It is believed crew members kept the fire under control as the ship made its way into Galway Bay.

The Irish coastguard helicopter was on standby to assist after a request from the captain to evacuate the crew which turned out not to be necessary.

The crew member being treated in University College Galway was not thought to be in a serious condition.

The ship was expected to be docked in Galway Bay overnight as investigations take place.
