Army barracks attack blamed on republicans

Two controlled explosions were carried out during a six-hour operation at a territorial army base last night in south Belfast.

Dissident republicans have been blamed for the attack in which a hole was blown in the perimeter fence of the base at Haywood Avenue, off the Ormeau Road.

Homes were evacuated during the operation which began around 7.30pm.

Two devices had been left in a hold-all at the territorial base, one of which exploded.
