Extortionists blamed for Derry arson attack

Equipment belonging to a demolition contractor was set on fire in Derry last night, apparently because the owner refused to pay £1,000 (€1,514) every week in protection money.

A low loader worth £10,000 (€15,140) was destroyed in last night's incident, while attempts were also made to set fire to a digger.

The equipment was being stored at the former Tillie and Henderson factory near the Craigavon bridge.

The vacant building has been attacked by arsonists on at least 20 other occasions in the past.

Joe Strawbridge, the contractor who owns the damaged machinery, said he was sure the attack took place because he refused to pay money to extortionists.
