The Supreme Court is expected to issue a ruling today which could have implications for hundreds of asylum seekers with Irish born children.

The case is being taken by a Czech family and a Nigerian man, who lost High Court challenges against their deportation last year.

The current situation in Ireland allows parents of Irish born babies to remain in this country, while the children are granted citizenship.

But this may change as a result of today's ruling.

The case has dwelt on whether the parents of children born in Ireland have an automatic right to live here to care for their babies.

The constitution states that all people born here can claim citizenship, regardless of the status or nationality of their parents, but the High Court has ruled that the state could deport parents of a baby born here even if this leads to the Irish citizen being removed from the country.
