Fine Gael and the Labour Party have both come out in opposition to plans by An Post to end door-to-door mail deliveries and introduce US-style letter-boxes at the ends of driveways and cul de sacs.

Fine Gael spokesman Simon Coveney said the existing service is "personal and excellent" and he called on Communications Minister Dermot Ahern to state if he supported An Post's plans.

Labour spokesman Brian O'Shea also praised the existing system and said the Government should put resources in place to ensure it is maintained.

He said An Post's plans would create huge difficulties for many people, especially the elderly, the disabled and people who live in isolated areas.
