The Irish Navy inspected 25% more fishing vessels last year than it did in 2001, according to its end-of-year statement.

The Navy said it boarded 1,727 vessels last year, with 16 being detained and 113 warned over various offences.

Overall, the navy reported 2,814 vessels fishing in Irish waters in 2002, an 18% increase on the previous year's levels.

The Navy also participated in 19 search-and-rescue operations during the year.
