Hep C compensation package finalised for Cork woman

The Department of Health has confirmed that it has concluded a compensation case with the family of a critically ill Cork woman.

Sylvia O'Leary from Ballincollig was infected with Hepatitis C during a life saving operation.

Her family had sought assurances from the Department that they would receive compensation if she dies.

Mrs O'Leary is currently on a life support machine in hospital.

The family solicitor, Melissa Gowen, said both she and the O'Learys are displeased that such pressure had to be applied on the Government in this case.

She said: "My client's family are happy with the outcome, but I should add that I am firmly of the belief, as they are, that it was only as a result of getting in contact with the media.

"And the O'Leary family are appalled at the invasion of privacy that it has caused at this terrible and sad time for the family."
