Government donates €63,000 to Malawi famine victims

The Minister for Agriculture and Food, Joe Walsh has announced a donation of €63,000 to assist farmers currently stricken by famine in Malawi.

Due to very poor maize harvests in the last two years, caused by long dry spells, food shortages in Malawi are currently critical.

An estimated 3.3m people are expected to need food aid this month. The funding, which is intended to support longer term planning and local capacity building, will be used to support the establishment of an agriculture coordination unit.
