A 17-year-old Irish girl has been killed in Cyprus following a hit-and-run collision, which also seriously injured her brother.

Police said Clare Carty and her brother Dermot, 23, were walking on the left side of a road near the west Cypriot resort of Coral Bay last night when a car hit them from behind. The car then overturned in a ditch.

The driver, a British resident in Cyprus, got out of the car, spent a short time at the scene and then fled. Police are trying to trace him.

Dermot Carty was admitted to Paphos hospital where his condition is described as serious. The pair had been holidaying in Cyprus.
