Child abuse group urges Connell to resign
The Irish Survivors of Child Abuse group has called on Cardinal Desmond Connell to follow the example of his US counterpart, Bernard Law, and resign.
Pope John Paul II accepted Cardinal Law's resignation today following his failure to properly handle child abuse allegations against priests in his charge.
A spokesman for Cardinal Connell said he will not be commenting on the matter, but John Kelly of the Irish Survivors of Child Abuse said: "Cardinal Connell has lost the confidence of the people...and the priests here now need to do what happened in America, where they stood up and they demanded Cardinal Law's resignation."
