Gardai in Athboy in Co Meath are investigating a raid on a filling station in the town early this morning.

The raid took place at 6.14am when three men wearing balaclavas and armed with iron bars and hammers attacked the owner of the premises at Trim Road.

He received injuries to his face and hand and was taken by ambulance to Our Lady's Hospital, Navan.

The raiders took a quantity of cash and approximately €20,000 worth of cigarettes before leaving the scene in a silver VW Passat which had its registration plates removed.
