Transport smartcards not ready for two years

A smartcard ticketing system for Ireland's transport vehicles may not be introduced until late 2005.

The system allows customers to walk on buses or trains and not even have to make contact with a conductor or a machine as the radio wave emitting electronic ticket communicates with a 'reader'.
