Mr. Bertie Ahern was speaking at the cairde-fail dinner in Dublin, which coincided with the 80th anniversary of the foundation of the state.

Ireland got its independence on December 6, 1922.

The Taoiseach said that we owed modern Ireland to many factors.

He praised and remembered the labour movement, the life of Michael Collins and WT Cosgrave.
