Operation Freeflow begins in Dublin

Gardaí in Dublin have kick-started the seventh annual Operation Freeflow in Dublin today.

The initiative is aimed at easing the increasingly bad traffic congestion in Dublin.

Extra gardaí have been deployed around the streets and roadworks have been temporarily halted.

Operation Freeflow is due to finish in January, but provisions have been made to extend that date.

John Henry of the Dublin Transport Office has said the system will have a major effect on traffic.

"The main element of it is an increase in the number of gardaí on the street to keep the traffic flowing.

"There will be more than 100 extra gardai on the streets. Night Link services have also been extended and a late-night Dart is in operation."
