€6m paid for claims against gardaí in five years

More than €6m has been paid out for claims taken against gardai over the last five years, Department of Justice figures show.

The figures are from the Department of Justice and taken from the last five years.

Opposition parties are now demanding an independent Garda authority must be established.

Labour's Joe Costello insisted the figures revealed by the Department of Justice indicate that the authority must be established.
