A police officer was injured tonight after a mob went on the rampage when two men were arrested.

A police officer was injured tonight after a mob went on the rampage when two men were arrested.

Officers came under attack from petrol bombs and other missiles shortly after taking the two men into custody.

The first man was arrested after he was spotted acting suspiciously near a bank in Market Street, Lurgan, Co Armagh.

A car drove off from the area and was chased by police. The car collided with other vehicles in North Street before being abandoned by the driver, who ran off.

Police officers pursued the man on foot and arested him a short distance away.

A suspicious object was discovered by police shortly afterwards in the garden of the home in the nearby Lake Street.

As the scene was sealed off, a number of youths gathered in the area and began to hurl missiles including a number of petrol bombs at police.
