The National Executive of the Irish Postmasters Union (IPU) has voted to recommend acceptance of a deal with An Post that will avert threatened interruptions to Christmas mail.

After over three hours of talks this evening, the executive came out in favour of the deal, which will give them moderate pay increases and means they no longer have to sort mail.

IPU chief executive John Kane said that the deal is a reasonable one.

He said: "It's not a great deal but it's a step in the right direction.

"The review process that will take place by the end of next March will maybe bring it to a more positive conclusion."
