Limerick City Alderman, Michael Kelly, has resigned his seat from the City Council.

Limerick City Alderman, Michael Kelly, has resigned his seat from the City Council.

The Independent Councillor was elected to the local authority in 1999.

Mr Kelly, 47, topped the poll in his local area in the last local elections.

He ran as an independent candidate in May's General Election.

So far, Limerick City Council has made no comment on the resignation, which takes immediate effect.

Mr Kelly, who is currently before the courts for alleged tax offences, has been unable for comment so far.

His solicitor, John Devane, said, "he is a good politician, a good local politician, with a voice that was heard and it saddens me greatly that this has now been quietened".
