Loyalist shot in punishment-style attack

A leading loyalist who survived an attempted murder bid last month has been shot in both legs in a paramilitary-style punishment attack in north Belfast.

Davy Mahood was attacked near the Benview Community Centre in the predominantly loyalist Ballysillan area last night.

The UDA subsequently claimed responsibility for the attack.

Mr Mahood is a member of the Ulster Political Research Group, the political wing of the UDA.

His shooting last night is believed to be linked to an internal feud between two factions in the paramilitary organisation.

Last month, Mr Mahood escaped an apparent assassination attempt in the Oldpark area of north Belfast while he was on his way to work.
