Reid urges republicans to abandon violence

Northern Ireland Secretary John Reid today renewed the plea to republican paramilitaries to abandon violence, warning that their activity was the major factor undermining power sharing.

But he warned loyalist paramilitaries, during question time in the British House of Commons, that they were providing the republican men of violence with an “excuse” to carry on.
