Man guilty of being accessory to murder

A Dublin man who had his conviction quashed for the murder of another man who was tortured to death, today pleaded guilty to being an accessory to murder.

Mr Scott Delaney (aged 26) of Palmerstown Park, Palmerstown, is currently serving a 10 year sentence for falsely imprisoning Mark Dwyer (aged 22) in 1996. Mr Dwyer's body was dumped in a field in Scribblestown, Finglas in Dublin on December 14 1996.

He was abducted from his flat at Foster Terrace, Ballybough, taken to another location, tortured and shot in the back of the head. The court had heard that Mr Dwyer, a friend of Scott Delaney, was murdered in the most "sadistic and vile" circumstances during a drugs feud.

Mr Delaney's father, 'Cotton Eye Joe' Delaney was also convicted of the murder at a later date.

The Court of Criminal Appeal had heard new evidence in relation to Scott Delaney which was not available at his trial, could have affected the verdict.

His plea today of guilty to being an accessory to murder was accepted by the State.

He will be sentenced on December 6.
