Customs officials in Rosslare Harbour have seized six million illegal cigarettes on a lorry that had arrived in the harbour from Cherbourg in France.

The cigarettes were concealed inside a 40-foot container among a consignment of furniture and household goods.

The vast majority were of the Sovereign Classic brand, while the remainder were Benson and Hedges.

The Revenue Commissioners said the haul represented a potential loss of €1.37m to the Irish Exchequer.

A British lorry driver was questioned in connection with the seizure, but was later released without charge.
