Two men refused bail at Cork court

Gardai brought two men to Cork District Court today on charges of importing cannabis resin with a street value of €125,000 into Ireland.

Detective Inspector Tom Myers said it was alleged that the two men travelled from Holyhead to Dun Laoghaire ferry port on Sunday, and then drove down to Cork. They stayed at the Fern Hill Golf Club Hotel, Carrigaline, Co Cork where they were arrested on Monday.

The two men were brought to Cork District Court today on charges of importing cannabis and having the drug for the purposes of sale or supply to others.

Detective Inspector Myers said he was not satisfied with the identities given by the accused and that if the same were granted bail they would not show up in court for their cases.

Judge Con O’Leary refused bail application by the defendants and remanded them in custody until Friday at Cork District Court.

Garreth John Brain, aged 21, of Landsbury Crescent, Maestege, South Wales admitted that he originally gave the name Gavin Jones because, he said, he was very confused.

Detective Inspector Myers said the second defendant identified himself as Jason Cunningham, aged 22, of Sunnybrook, Walingham, Surrey, England. But Gardai believe his real name may be John Paul Eton.
