Five charged with IRA membership

Five Dublin men were charged at a special sitting of the Special Criminal Court today with IRA membership.

Five Dublin men were charged at a special sitting of the Special Criminal Court today with IRA membership.

The men were arrested in Bray Co, Wicklow on Friday and were brought under tight security for their court appearance.

They are Thomas Gilson (aged 22), of Bawnlea Avenue, Jobstown, Tallaght, , Patrick Brennan (aged 38), of Lindisfarne Avenue, Clondalkin, Sean O’ Donnell (aged 30), of Castle Drive, Sandymount, Stephen Birney (aged 28), of Conquerhill Road, Clontarf and John Troy (aged 20), of Donard Avenue, Dublin.

All five were each charged with membership of an illegal organisation styling itself the Irish Republican Army, otherwise Oglaigh na hEireann, otherwise the IRA on October 11.

The court heard evidence from Special Branch detectives that they arrested the five men at Convent Avenue, outside Bray Garda Station on Friday afternoon.

All five had earlier been in custody at Bray garda station after their arrest for alleged theft.

None of the five men said anything in court during the 40 minute hearing and the court remanded all five in custody until next Wednesday.
