British Prime Minister Tony Blair tonight stepped up demands for the IRA to disband amid fears that Northern Ireland could face years of being ruled by ministers from Westminster.

As British government sources confirmed they were planning to suspend devolution in Belfast early next week and strengthen their Northern Ireland Office ministerial team, Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams warned the return of direct rule would be a grave mistake.
