The ISPCA is appealing to pet owners to get their dogs or cats neutered in an attempt to limit the number of unwanted animals.

The plea coincides with World Animal Welfare week.

Ciaran O’Donovan of the Society for the prevention of cruelty to animals says thousands of homeless dogs are destroyed each year.

"There are 30,000 unwanted dogs put down in dog pounds around the country every year. These are dogs that are not reclaimed after straying, they are dogs who are brought into dog pounds by people who don't care about them and also dogs that are picked up by dog wardens," said Mr O'Donovan.
