The head of the North's police anti-child abuse unit tonight called for tougher measures to prevent paedophiles preying on children.

Detective Chief Inspector William McAuley, co-ordinator of the Child Abuse and Rape Enquiry (CARE) Unit said failure to introduce legislation enabling officers to use intelligence to stop suspected abusers from working with children was hampering its work.
