The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, has said he would never have appointed Ray Burke to the cabinet in 1997 if he was aware of the disgraced politician’s alleged involvement in official corruption.

Mr Ahern appointed Mr Burke as Minister for Foreign Affairs after the general election in 1997, despite widespread allegations that he had received corrupt payments.
