Violence mars victory celebrations

Minor outbreaks of violence in Co Armagh last night soured the celebration of Armagh's first ever All-Ireland football win.

Police reported that a crowd of several hundred nationalists attacked Lurgan police station, ripping security cameras from the walls and putting tri-colours over local war memorials.

It was also reported that a police officer was slightly injured in clashes between nationalists and loyalists between Market Street and Carnegie Street a short time later.

However, local Sinn Fein Councillor John O'Dowd down-played the seriousness of last night's incidents, saying only a very tiny minority of people from either community were involved.

He described PSNI allegations that 'hundreds' attacked Lurgan police Station as 'ridiculous'.
