Dubliner arrested in connection with cannabis find

Gardai arrested a Dubliner today and charged him with having €200,000 worth of cannabis resin in a taxi in Cork City yesterday.

Paul Nolan, aged 32, of Oriel Street, Dublin 1, was arrested and brought before Cork District Court.

Inspector Tom Myers said the gardai were not objecting to bail but would be looking for a substantial independent surety.

Judge Uinsin MacGruairc remanded Nolan in custody with consent to bail of €3000, €1000 to be lodged, independent surety of €30,000, €10,000 to be lodged, or cash of €30,000.

Inspector Myers said it was alleged that the defendant was caught red-handed and the gardai believed if he was released he would abscond.

Garda Philip Moore arrested and charged Nolan with having cannabis resin and having it for the purpose of sale or supply to others at Comeragh Park, The Glen, Cork yesterday. Garda Moore said the quantity of drugs involved was 15kg with a street value of €200,000.

Free legal aid solicitor Donal Daly said a substantial bail was tantamount to a refusal of bail as the defendant and his family had extremely limited resources.

Nolan was remanded in custody to appear again at Cork District Court tomorrow when it is anticipated the case will be further adjourned.
