The Consumers Association has said the increase in ESB charges announced this afternoon is a direct result of the lack of competition in the Irish electricity sector.

Dermot Jewell, the association’s chief executive, also said that due to the ESB’s near-monopoly, customers have no choice but to accept the increase.
