ASTI committee to discuss supervision and substitution
The Association of Secondary Teachers’ standing committee will meet today to review the issue of supervision and substitution duties.
The meeting follows a call by the union’s vice-president, Pat Cahill, for talks with the Government on its long-running 30% pay claim.
The ASTI began refusing to cover supervision and substitution last year as part of that pay claim, forcing the Department of Education to hire “outsiders” at €37-an-hour to cover these duties.
It has vowed to continue its boycott until Education Minister Noel Dempsey agrees to address the 30% pay claim.
The standing committee has no authority to overturn this boycott.
