Fine Gael’s Gay Mitchell has called on the Nigerian Ambassador to explain the death sentence handed down to a woman convicted of adultery in the west African country.

Mr Mitchell, who is also chairman of the Dail committee on European affairs, said the sentence is barbaric and he called on the Government to condemn such brutality.

"We have to get across to the Nigerian authorities that this sort of sentence in the 21st century is totally unacceptable and it’s not the sort of thing that we expect of civilised states," he said.
