Cork climber buried today

A Corkman who died in a climbing tragedy on an Italian mountainside last week was buried today in his native village of Coachford.

Eoin O'Connell of Aghravin, Coachford, died after falling onto rocks while climbing on the Italian side of Europe's highest mountain, Mont Blanc.

Family and friends gathered in Aghabullogue Church this morning to say farewell to the 22-year-old UCC engineering graduate.

His remains were then laid to rest in St John's Cemetery in Coachford.

The son of Jack and Mary O'Connell, Eoin is also survived by his brother Colum and sisters Maeve, Niamh and Erinn.

Eoin O'Connell is reported to have lost his footing while climbing the famous mountain, which straddles the French, Italian and Swiss borders, and to have fallen a short way on to sharp rocks.

He was from a farming background and was interested in walking, climbing and photography.
