The body of a man was discovered in a drain today by a couple walking through a popular Dublin park, gardai said.

The grim discovery was made at around lunchtime in Marlay Park, which hosts pop concerts and other major events in Dublin.

The area, near to a railway line in south Dublin, was sealed off and forensic officers were examining the scene.

A pathologist from the State Pathologist’s Office was also called to the park to conduct an initial examination on the body before it was removed for a postmortem.

A garda spokesman said: ‘‘The body of a male was found in the drain at 1.30pm in Marlay Park, Rathfarnham, by a couple out walking.

‘‘Gardai are investigating the circumstances of the incident. Officers from the Garda Technical Bureau are conducting an investigation.

‘‘The State Pathologist has been notified,’’ he added.
