Reid says communities must work together

Northern Secretary John Reid has appealed to nationalist and unionist communities to increase their efforts to make the peace process work.

Dr Reid was speaking after the murder of 51-year-old David Caldwell yesterday by suspected dissident republicans.

He said that these dissidents and the anti-agreement loyalists who murdered 19-year-old Gerard Lawlor two weeks ago have the exact same agenda - the collapse of the peace process.

"They're two sides of the same coin," he said. "They have the same mindset, which is a murderous contempt for the overwhelming majority of people in Northern Ireland, and they have the same intent, which is to bring down the peace process. The real question is: 'Are we going to give in to those gunmen?'"
