The Economic and Social Research Institute has predicted a €947m deficit in the public finances by the end of this year - despite the Government’s insistence that it can achieve a €170m surplus.

In its quarterly report, the ESRI urged the Government to take tough choices and said the time for high expenditure and low taxes has passed.
