Smith cuts back on deafness claim scheme

Defence Minister Michael Smith has announced plans to halt the early settlement scheme for army deafness claims as part of cutbacks in his department.

Army deafness claims have cost the Irish taxpayer around €245m to date and 4,000 claims have yet to be heard under the early settlement scheme introduced two years ago.
