Last Thursday a man was convicted of raping his wife. It was the first such conviction in Irish history.

In the decade since the Criminal Law Amendment Act of 1990 made it a crime for a husband to have sex with his wife against her will, only two other women have brought their husbands to court with allegations of rape. Both trials ended in acquittals.
