Taoiseach hopes for no legal action with FAI

Taoiseach Bertie Ahern is hoping that an amicable solution can be found to resolve the FAI's situation with coverage of home international soccer games.

Mr Ahern stressed that it was not logical to be taking money off sports associations because they are there for the public.

However, the FAI has been told there is a legal route the Government can take if necessary to protect the terrestrial coverage of the soccer games.

Mr Ahern, while noting that nobody wanted to get involved with legal action, said today that it was on the cards if needed.

The Taoiseach thinks the situation could be avoidable because the next football game is so far away.

The next Irish soccer match that is due to take place in Lansdowne Road is in October.
