A group of demonstrators has halted on-shore works on the Corrib gas project in protest at work being carried out by the oil giant Shell.

The angry locals said Shell was not given consent to carry out the work at Glengad in Co Mayo, but the company said it has received permission.

Maureen Harrington, one of the protestors, said: "We are opposing vehemently what Shell oil company is doing to our beach, which we do not think they have consent for, and we are quite willing to remain here for as long as it takes to get this matter rectified."
