An Irish teenager has died after being buried under wet sand while digging a hole at a popular Australian seaside resort.

An Irish teenager has died after being buried under wet sand while digging a hole at a popular Australian seaside resort.

His mother pleaded with bystanders who dug desperately in an attempt to find the 14-year-old.

It took almost half an hour to uncover his body at Noosa Beach, about 74 miles North of Brisbane.

Ambulance officers were unable to revive the boy, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The Department of Foreign Affairs has been made aware of the tragedy.
