Lobby group concerned about organ retention inquiry

Parents of children whose organs were retained by hospitals without their knowledge have expressed concern that an inquiry into the scandal may never materialise.

Parents of children whose organs were retained by hospitals without their knowledge have expressed concern that an inquiry into the scandal may never materialise.

The Parents for Justice group said the recent judgement in the Abbeylara case could either limit or destroy plans for an organ retention inquiry.

The Supreme Court ruled that the Oireachtas does not have the power to make findings which could damage the reputation of citizens.

Parents for Justice has now called on the Minister for Health to make a statement on how the ruling will affect their case.

"We regard ourselves to be in somewhat of a limbo at the moment," spokesperson Fionnuala O’Reilly said.

She added: "We would be urging the minister and the Attorney General to bring some clarity to this situation sooner rather than later."
