Fine Gael’s Jimmy Deenihan has called on the Government to intervene and have the venue for the Irish football team’s homecoming switched to Dublin city centre.

The Gardai have decided that the event will be held in the Phoenix Park for 'security reasons', but Sports Minister John O’Donoghue has already said he would prefer if the team was welcomed home in the College Green area.

The FAI has said it had no say in the choice of venue.

Ireland’s last World Cup homecoming - after USA ’94 - was also held in the Phoenix Park and was regarded by many fans as a let-down.
