Temporary Lord Mayor of Dublin elected

The Capital’s new Lord Mayor was elected overnight, for what may be the shortest reign in the history of the city.

Anthony Creevey, a Fianna Fail councillor, will only hold the post for three weeks, before he is removed.

Creevey was elected to the Dail for Dublin South Central. The Local Government Bill forbids a member of the Oireachtas from holding the coveted position, so Mr Creevey will have to be replaced.

A new Lord Mayor will be elected at next month’s Council meeting.

It seems likely at this stage that the current Deputy Lord Mayor and Labour Party member Eric Byrne will be returned to the position.
