Dempsey hints at new taxes

Environment Minister Noel Dempsey has hinted that the incoming Government might introduce taxes on chewing gum and take-away packaging following the success of the 15c plastic bag tax introduced earlier this year.

Speaking to mark World Environment Day, Mr Dempsey said the plastic bag tax has changed people's habits and should be extended to cover other items responsible for litter problems countrywide.

"I have no doubt that over the next number of years, things like the soft drinks cans, fast-food outlets, even chewing gum - they will all be considered for levies of some kind or other and I think that the success of the plastic bag levy will encourage people to go down that particular route."
