Orde facing tough task

London's Metropolitan Police Deputy Assistant Commissioner Hugh Orde has been chosen as Northern Ireland's new Chief Constable.

But two of the board to appoint Orde failed to back the appointment.

Mr Orde was selected for one of the toughest policing jobs in the world following interviews in Belfast.

He beat off the challenge of two internal Police Service of Northern Ireland candidates, Alan McQuillan and Chris Albiston, in the race for the post.

Mr Orde, who has been running the investigation into allegations of security force collusion in the murder of Belfast lawyer Pat Finucane by loyalist paramilitaries, will now spearhead the PSNI ongoing programme of reform.
