Independent seeks injunction to stop election going ahead

A temporary High Court injunction to stop the general election from going ahead in Carlow-Kilkenny is being sought by prospective independent candidate Dr Patrick Jones.

He declared his candidacy in July last year, and is taking the action against the Environment Minister, the returning officer for his constituency, the Attorney General and party leaders on grounds of discrimination.

Dr Jones said being asked to provide 30 signatures on the ballot paper, discriminates against him under the Equal Opportunities Act.

"I believe this violates the constitution. I believe it discriminates against me," he said.

"After all, we are all applying for a job we are presenting ourselves as candidates for a position and there should be no discrimination between candidates."
